当初送った原稿に対して大会テーマに関連した一文を加筆するように事務局から注文が付き、書き直して送りなおしたのに、結局当初の文章が掲載された、といういわくつきのサマリーである。

 Do sites exist? : issues in archaeological "site"
 How should we view an archaeological site? An archaeological site is a multi-complex formation where various traces overlap. These traces belong to different time periods and are different in extent. Therefore it is difficult to determine the boundary of the site. When archaeology was formed in the 19th century, the site concept was made an indispensable element of the discipline. This concept explained the specified meaning of a site; a place which has a definite area in a certain extent. This is a substantial view. We regard such an archaeological site as a substantial matter, and perform our daily excavation on the basis of this view. The cognition of the archaeological sites is a crucial element in disciplinary practices. The myth of "sites" comes from prehistoric site images. However, modern and post-modern sites go against our willful ideas about sites. Based on a substantial view of the "site", a Japanese classification and administration system for archaeological sites named "houzou-chi", was established and through its use, the "site" is further substantiated. However, the "site" concept includes a principally unsolvable contradiction and it is important to understand that the "site" is a socially constructed concept and it is impossible to put a site in only one or two categories. By clarifying the "site problem", we should critically review the structure that maintains the Japanese view on archaeological site.

　遺跡は存在するか？　-遺跡問題の構成-
　＜遺跡＞とは何か？　＜遺跡＞は､異なる時代痕跡が異なる広がりをもって重複して残された多様体（リゾーム）である。＜遺跡＞の範囲を確定することは、原理的に不可能である。＜遺跡＞は、学問としての考古学が成立する際に不可欠な構成要素として産出された。そして考古学にとって必須の対象概念として語られて来た。＜遺跡＞概念には、あらかじめ意味と内容が合意されている。すなわち「実体視」されている。そこには＜遺跡＞とはこのようなものである、という私たちの思い込みあるいは願望が作用している。しかし近世あるいは近現代＜遺跡＞は、そうした勝手な思い込みを裏切る矛盾に満ちた存在である。＜遺跡＞という実体視によって、「包蔵地」という区分単位が成立し、埋文行政が遂行され、その実践過程においてさらに＜遺跡＞が実体化されていく。＜遺跡＞問題の解明を通じて、日本的＜遺跡＞観を支えている構造を批判的に捉え返す必要がある。
